Beating Burley’s Bounds

August 28 @ 09:30 - 17:00

Venue: Meet at the Roundhouse, Grange Park

Description: Beating the Bounds was a processional walk traditionally conducted over the centuries by communities on Rogation Sunday in spring to help identify and preserve parish boundaries, and to bless the fields. While the practice continues in some parts of the country, it has only occasionally been undertaken in Burley in recent times. Our revived walk will cover 12 miles, some of it at a high level. We will loosely follow the Burley in Wharfedale boundary, visiting some of the highlights of our local countryside, from riverside meadows to high moorland. The route will use footpaths and moorland tracks and will be over rough ground on occasions. However, we do not intend to bump children onto prominent landmarks and boundary stones as previously – only the adults! Sensible footwear and clothing are essential. We will visit Clevedon restaurant for morning coffee and Bleach Mill for afternoon tea. Please bring a picnic and drinks for lunch. We aim to be back in Burley between 4.30 and 5.00 pm. More information about Beating the Bounds can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beating_the_bounds
