16th Burley Classic Show

As part of the Burley Summer Festival approximately 330 historic and modern classic cars and motorcycles, commercial vehicles, 4 x 4’s, American, custom and competition cars were exhibited at Burley Cricket Club. There were displays by local and national car clubs and around 150 private exhibitors, with cars ranging from the super sporting GT Coupes of the Aston Martin Owners Club, the ever popular MG’s, and cars like the Austin 7 Chummy that were on our roads 100 years ago.

1952 Daimler Barker Sport

Displayed as part of the City of Leeds MG & CCC

Owner: Jimmy Goodall

Jimmy, who has been a regular exhibitor over recent years, has owned this very elegant car for the last 49 years. There are only about 80 of these cars still in existence worldwide, about 20 of which are in the UK.

1970 Dodge Charger

Gary Walker

One of the most powerful of the American muscle cars that became popular in the 1960’s, with high-performance V8 engines of 6 or 7 litres

Organisers’ Choice

1909 Hupmobile Model 20

Private entry

Owner: Dave Jones

This vehicle attracted much attention during the day. Produced by the Hupp Motor Car Company in Detroit, it is one of only 2 in the UK. Dave has owned this car for 12 months and has put countless hours into getting the car running well whilst maintaining its authenticity. He went shopping for a historic 2-seater tourer and came home with this rather unusual one.

1952 Jowett Van

Owner: Martin Pellitt

Martin is a regular attendee at the show, exhibiting the beautifully maintained Jowett Van which was purchased from the Bradford based manufacturer by his father for use in the family business.

Best Club Display

Jaguar Drivers’ Club

This is the first time the Jaguar Drivers Club have attended as a group, although some local members have previously exhibited as private entries.  This display showed the evolution of this famous marque, from the sports and GT XK150s and the luxurious 420 that used the 6-cylinder XK engine that also powered Le Mans winners, through the 12-cylinder Series 3 E-type, to the 8-cylinder models which power the cars of the 2000’s.

1967 VW Beetle Convertible

Private Entry

Owner: Craig Simpson

The prototype VW Beetle, so named because of its shape, was first made in 1938 but serious production did not start until 1945, although production ceased in Europe in 1978, the Beetle continued to be produced in Mexico until 2003.  Craig has only recently purchased this vehicle and was keen to exhibit it locally.

1961 E-type S1 Lightweight Race Car

Displayed as part of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club

These cars were built to compete in International GT races in the 1960’s and are now regularly competing in historic race events across the world, including recent competition at Harewood Hill Climb.

Best Yorkshire Vehicle

Jowitt Javelin

Displayed as part of Craven Old Wheels

Owner: R Meekings

Just over 23000 Jowitt Javelins were built in Idle, Bradford, between 1947 and 1952. The 50hp cars had a maximum speed of 76 mph. Jowitt Javelins were very successful in International Motor Sport, including the Monte-Carlo Rally and RAC Rally.

Renowned as one of the most reliable and rugged vehicles throughout all parts of the world, and a vehicle chosen for use in some of the most remote locations.

Best Motorcycle

1972 Triumph Adventurer

Owner: Richard Keith

Richard is a regular exhibitor at the Burley Classic Show with his collection of motorcycles. The Adventurer was an evolution of the TR5 Trophy, a bike made famous by the American film star James Dean and which was also used by the Fonz in ‘Happy Days’.
